Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House to discuss key issues including trade, tariffs, and defense collaboration.
The leaders addressed the imposition of higher U.S. tariffs on Indian goods, with President Trump emphasizing the need for fair trade practices. He referred to India as the "tariff king" due to its high import duties and insisted that India would not be exempt from the heightened U.S. tariffs imposed globally.
Despite these challenges, both leaders expressed a commitment to strengthening economic ties. Discussions included the potential for a major trade deal later in the year and a ten-year defense cooperation plan, which may involve the sale of F-35 fighter jets to India.
Prime Minister Modi also met with Tesla CEO Elon Musk to explore opportunities in space, mobility, technology, and innovation. They discussed deepening cooperation in emerging technologies and entrepreneurship, as well as the potential entry of SpaceX's Starlink into the Indian market.
This visit underscores the ongoing efforts by both nations to enhance their strategic partnership, focusing on mutual interests in trade, defense, and technological innovation.
